Big Cat Weekend seems to have been a big success for the Auburn Tigers. After picking up a couple of commitments and getting a good look at several other recruits, the Tigers have continued to impress potential targets.
The newest addition to the list of impressed recruits is four-star DE Ryan Johnson, who was in attendance for the Big Cat event. A report by al.com said Johnson, a member of the 2017 class, liked what he saw at Auburn:
Johnson, the No. 6 strong-side defensive end in the country according to 247Sports, left the Plains with the Tigers near the top of his list following Big Cat Weekend.
“They’re in my top group,” Johnson said.
That group includes Alabama, Notre Dame and Stanford, though the 6-foot-3, 253-pound defensive end said he’ll narrow his list down to an official top five before the start of his senior season this fall.
But, Johnson added, he likes the way the Tigers are recruiting him. It seems Auburn coach Gus Malzahn and his coaching staff want to stay in the ear of the highly rated defensive end:
In short, Johnson said the Auburn coaching staff is “stressing the issue” when it comes to his recruitment. The four-star prospect seems to be enjoying the ride so far, even if he isn’t sure yet where it will take him.
“I’m loving it because I can tell they’re making me a priority and that I’m not just anybody who got an offer and then not keep in touch,” Johnson said. “I talk to the coaches every day, just keeping in contact with them a lot during the week is great.”
There is a fine line between making a recruit feel wanted and annoying said recruit with endless phone calls and text messages, but it seems Auburn is walking that tightrope masterfully with Johnson.
