Baker Mayfield comments on his flu-like symptoms ahead of Monday’s Rose Bowl

This isn’t shocking news, but Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield is officially planning to play in Monday’s Rose Bowl against Georgia.

The Heisman Trophy winner has been sick in recent days, but that isn’t going to stop him from competing in what likely will be the biggest game of his college career.

“Something going around, a couple of other guys on the team have had it,” Mayfield said about the sickness. “It’s flu-like. I wouldn’t say it’s the flu, but it’s pretty much like that. Yesterday was the best I’ve felt all week. Obviously I’d like to be out there with my team doing all the fun activities that the Rose Bowl puts on. But when it comes down to it, it’s not going to hinder my playoffs.

“I’ll still be out there on Monday for the most important thing,” Mayfield added. “I came back to win a national title. And our team, we’ve had our eyes set on that. We know to get there we have to win this next one. That’s been our mentality. We have to play championship games every week, so for us, we’re not going to treat this one any differently.”

While Georgia would probably have an easier time knocking off Oklahoma without Mayfield playing, it might not mean quite as much. It appears the Sooners will be at full strength on Monday.

Kickoff is set for 5 p.m. ET. The game will be televised on ESPN.
