BCS vs. CFP committee: Simulated BCS rankings put Alabama in 12-team field over SMU
If the BCS was still around, Alabama fans would be feeling a little differently than they did on Sunday, when the Crimson Tide were left out of the 12-team College Football Playoff by the committee.
Unfortunately for Alabama, it’s 2024, the Playoff selection committee decides things, and it decided that those 3 regular-season losses were a little too much. Instead, SMU got the final spot and the corresponding No. 11 seed.
The side-by-side bracket comparing the first 12-team Playoff between what the committee had and what the simulated BCS would’ve had if it was, you know, 2008 or something, shows that the only difference was Alabama and SMU. Here’s the comparison:

In the side-by-side Top 25 rankings comparing the simulated BCS and the Playoff committee, Alabama is No. 11 in both. The difference came down to SMU being ranked 10th by the Playoff committee and the BCS putting the Mustangs at No. 12. SMU was able to squeeze in as the No. 11 seed in the actual Playoff, but if the BCS was still running the show, the Mustangs would’ve been out and the Crimson Tide would’ve been in as the No. 11 seed.

The arguments will be endless in the aftermath of Sunday’s Playoff selections, probably not calming down until the actual Playoff games begin on Dec. 20. Here are the best odds to win the College Football Playoff.
