Earlier today it was announced that the Southeastern Conference’s new position of Coordinator of Football Replay was named for the 2016 season, and Ben Oldham earned the inaugural duties. According to secsports.com, the newly-created position will report to SEC Coordinator of Football Officials, Steve Shaw.
Oldham will provide oversight for the SEC’s instant replay process and help with the instant replay system which is at SEC headquarters starting this season.
“As we expand instant replay in the SEC, we felt it was important to have someone with an extensive resume of both on the field and replay booth experience help manage the process,” said Shaw, in the article. “Ben Oldham brings four decades worth of officiating experience in both of those areas and I am excited to have him serve in this role as we embark on a new era of instant replay in the SEC.”
Oldham’s experience is surely extensive, as he has worked in 24 NCAA bowl games and has officiated six SEC Championship Games in some role. His latest role was as an instant replay official for the 2015 College Football Playoff Semifinal when Florida State faced Oregon.
The instant replay process has gotten more in-depth across the entire sports landscape over the past decade or so in particular, and Oldham’s experience will only add to the transparency for fans within the conference and its new system.
