Big 12 teams are known to score a ton of points, and being able to have a difference maker at the quarterback position is an absolute must. On Saturday, another quarterback made national news as former Tennessee QB Nico Iamaleava announced he was entering the transfer portal after a contract dispute with the team.
Iamaleava entered the transfer portal Wednesday, leaving the Volunteers with only 2 scholarship players at the quarterback position. One of the team’s rumored targets was TCU quarterback Josh Hoover, but he has reportedly elected to stay in Fort Worth.
Hoover has been very good at TCU in the last 2 seasons as a starter. Last season, he was especially productive, as he finished with 3,949 yards while leading the team to a 9-4 record.
Tennessee coach Josh Heupel has already come out and said the team will be looking to bring in another quarterback, so the Vols are portal hunting. Right now, Jake Merklinger and true freshman George MacIntyre are the only 2 scholarship QBs on the roster.
For the Volunteers, Heupel took a risk by not giving Iamaleava more money to stay on Rocky Top. He is getting a lot of praise right now from the Tennessee fans, but that will change if they struggle at that position.
