Bill Belichick was formally introduced as the North Carolina head coach on Thursday, and we now have more details about his contract at UNC.

Belichick has agreed to a 5-year deal to coach the Tar Heels. As was initially reported, 3 years for $30 million are guaranteed. It becomes a 5-year, $50 million deal if he coaches all 5 seasons (2025-29).

The length of the contract stands out. College coaches often seek long-term deals for a couple of reasons. The longer the deal, the easier it is to pitch recruits that you will be their head coach while they are on campus. Longer deals also tend to come with higher buyout sums, offering more job security.

Belichick, though, is not your average college coach.

Belichick’s shorter-than-usual contract, the 3/30 guaranteed deal, may work just fine considering the state of the college game. While coaches hope to have signees on campus for 3-5 years, the transfer portal is as popular as ever. NIL-related transfers are compared to free agency, and Belichick certainly knows all about roster-building from his decades in the NFL.

While job security is a concern for most coaches, Belichick likely isn’t worried. He has obviously been well-compensated as a 6-time Super Bowl winner. And there’s the fact that he’s only looking to coach so long. Belichick is now the oldest active coach in college football at 72.

More on Belichick’s perks, like a membership to Chapel Hill Country Club, bonuses and his buyout, can be viewed in the documents shared by Andrew Carter of The News & Observer.
