Billy Napier gives brief update on DJ Lagway, expresses confidence in Aidan Warner
Billy Napier and the Florida Gators are taking a 13-6 lead into the halftime break against Georgia on Saturday.
While that in and of itself is a good start for Florida, it didn’t come without a cost. Florida freshman phenom DJ Lagway had to be carted off the field with an apparent lower-body injury in the second quarter.
In his halftime interview with ESPN’s Holly Rowe, Napier confirmed that Lagway is dealing with a hamstring injury and said it was a “significant” one.
Napier also expressed confidence in his replacement, Yale transfer Aidan Warner. Warner joined the program as a walk-on back in the spring after redshirting in 2023 at Yale.
“The Yale transfer. Both parents are double Gators. Aidan has impressed me,” Napier told Rowe. “He’s earned that backup role. He’s had some great practices the past couple of weeks. We’ve got to play well around him. We’ve got to play with balance. And then he’s got to be a good decision-maker. We’ve got to play good on defense and find some plays in the kicking game.”
Florida’s defense did a lot of the heavy lifting in the first half. Ten of UF’s 13 first-half points came off of Georgia turnovers. Still, the Gators did manage to average 4.7 yards per play before the break.
Florida is looking for its first win over Georgia since 2020.
