Thanksgiving Facts

  • Depending on whom you ask, the first real Thanksgiving either first happened in 1621 at Plymouth Rock (the one you’re thinking of), one day in October of 1578 in Canada, or in Texas in 1541. But if you ask us, if the South has a chance to claim the beginning of this great holiday, we might as well. Texas it is.
  • According to the National Turkey Federation, an estimated 46 million turkeys give their life for the enjoyment of Thanksgiving festivities each year. An estimated 690 million pounds of turkey were consumed for Thanksgiving in 2007, the last year data was available.
  • The Macy’s Day Parade began in 1924 in New York City and is considered the second-oldest Thanksgiving Parade. No ballon has appeared more times in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade than Snoopy.
  • The first Thanksgiving Day football game was between Yale and Princeton in 1876. Yale won. Alabama still claims a championship for this year.
  • Black Friday received its name in the ‘90s because it was said to be the weekend where retailers finally “hit the black” or began being profitable in a given year. Of the roughly 140 million who shopped last year, 12 percent of Black Friday shoppers last year claimed to still be drunk while shopping in stores the next day.

Happy Thanksgiving!
