Booger McFarland and many others weighed in after the final release of the College Football Playoff rankings on Sunday following conference Championship Week, and he is largely pleased with the way things shook out.

The committee had made some controversial decisions all year long, and while not everyone is in full agreeable over these final standings, they seem to be a lot less polarizing than those in previous weeks.

“After the last few years, I think they got it right,” McFarland said. “Based on the criteria we have to deal with this year, I think (the CFP selection committee) got it right.”

He doubled down on that once more as he continued.

“I think that when you look at some of the things coaches have said… about rewarding or penalizing a team when they (lose) in a conference championship game. you don’t want to do that and they didn’t do that to SMU. They played.”

Alabama and SMU were perhaps the hottest topics during the reveal as the two teams essentially went head-to-head for that final 11th spot in. The Mustangs took the cake, despite suffering a 34-31 loss to the Clemson Tigers. Many would say the committee did the right thing by not penalizing the team, which could have disincentivized playing in conference championships all together.

Such could be a major problem for the sport moving forward. Now, teams like SMU will have a chance to prove themselves in the new expanded format to show why they edged out previously dominant forces like Alabama.
