Booms and Busts for upcoming bowl week

Here are the bowl game candidates to “boom” and to “bust” around the SEC:

BOOM

1. Amari Cooper: Cooper was the best player in the SEC, so its not surprise that he’ll be a major factor in Alabama’s biggest game of the season thus far. The junior will remain the focal point of the Tide’s offense and the top target for quarterback Blake Sims.

2. Nick Marshall: Marshall ends one of the most successful careers for a quarterback in Auburn’s history during the Outback Bowl. The senior has the playmaking ability to take over a game and should do so against Wisconsin. Despite Duke Williams’ suspension, the Tigers still have a plethora of targets for the elusive Marshall to find downfield, while also contributing as a mobile option.

3. Leonard Fournette: Fournette matched his high preseason expectations as one of the SEC’s top freshman backs, despite splitting carries with his teammates. The New Orleans native should continue his success against a Notre Dame team that finds itself on a four-game losing streak.

BUST

1. Treon Harris: Harris is responsible for the Gators earning bowl eligibility by working as a game managing quarterback. But the true freshman has done little to prove he’s a top-tier passer and shouldn’t be expected to put up high passing numbers.

2. Hutson Mason: Much like Harris, Mason has benefited from a strong rushing attack and worked as a game manager. But, facing Louisville’s No. 2 overall rushing defense, the senior may see an expanded role and become a difference maker. Mason will face Gerod Holliman, whose 14 interceptions lead the nation.

3.  Maty Mauk: Mauk’s play has been inconsistent at times and should be main focus of the Gophers defense. Minnesota ranks as the No. 30 passing defense in the nation and should provide strong coverage against Missouri’s passing attack. The Tigers should rely on a strong rushing attack, which could take passing attempts away from Mauk.
