To open the second day of the league’s annual media day event, head of SEC officials Steve Shaw broke down the latest rule changes for the league heading into the 2016 season.

  • Game clock in the last two minutes of the half: If the game clock is stopped due to a penalty, the team that did not surrender the penalty will have the option of starting the clock before the snap of the ball.
  • Tripping a ball carrier is now a a foul; giving the ball carrier the same safety as all other players
  • Blocking below the waist is now legal in the tackle box, until the ball leaves the pocket
  • The replay officials ability to stop the game and evaluate for a concussion is now officially a rule. This was first used last season on a trial basis, now it has become a new rule.
  • Unsportsmanlike conduct for coaches – If a coach gets two personal foul calls against him, he will be ejected.
  • The replay officials may now review targeting calls and overrule the ruling on the field if necessary.
  • Already well-documented, the SEC is moving to a collaborative replay system headquartered at the SEC’s league offices.
