Brian Kelly and LSU are right now in the phase of starting to formulate what their depth charts are going to be at every position. Earlier in the week, LSU running back John Emery announced on social media that he would be back for a 7th year.
When he announced that, the thought was that he would be back at LSU next season. However, when talking to reporters, Kelly said that won’t be the case as the team really likes the depth chart of LSU’s running backs.
“We haven’t talked to John about it, and it was the first that we had heard,” Brian Kelly told reporters when asked if Emery would be at LSU. “We love John. But sometimes you know, things happen and we don’t know where they came from. We will be supportive in any way we can, but we are set where we are at in terms of the running back position. Love John, and we will be here to help and support him.”
While he said Emery will play somewhere else, Kelly does believe he can still play big time college football.
“If he is given the 7th year, he is certainly a young man that can help someone in the Power-4,” Kelly said.
The No. 1 running back on LSU’s depth chart is Caden Durham, who burst onto the scene last year as a freshman with 753 yards. Kaleb Jackson is another guy who figures to get the ball for the Tigers.
Emery originally came to LSU as a 5-star prospect and one of the top players from Louisiana in the 2019 recruiting class. Unfortunately, injuries took their toll, including last year when he sustained a season-ending injury in just one appearance.
