After missing almost all of last season with a torn ACL, Brian Kelly is hoping to get Maason Smith some snaps in Saturday’s game against Grambling State this Saturday.

While Kelly doesn’t expect Smith to get significant playing time since it will be his first game since September of last year, he will be looking to get Smith a little more comfortable as he prepares for a full return.

“I think we have to be realistic that when you haven’t played in over a year, he’s not going to play the duration of the game,” Kelly said during the SEC coaches teleconference on Wednesday. “We’re looking obviously if we can get somewhere near 30 snaps, we’d be really excited about that. He’s practicing for us. But it’s going to take a little bit of time. Hopefully we get somewhere in that range of quality snaps for him and give him a chance to impact the game.”

His freshman season in 2021, Smith had 19 total tackles and 4 sacks. Smith tore his ACL in the opening drive of LSU’s season-opener a year ago and did not play the remainder of the season.
