Brian Kelly speaks to Mike Denbrock’s impact on LSU’s high-flying offense
LSU’s offense took flight under second-year offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock, and Tigers coach Brian Kelly says it’s more than Denbrock calling the right plays.
“He’s central to it because certainly coordinating it requires the input [of the staff],” Kelly told reporters on Monday regarding Denbrock. “I’m a big believer that you don’t really get a buy-in unless you get everyone to weigh in. He’s getting input from the entire offensive staff and then putting it together.”
“It’s never a one-man show. It’s a collaborative and cohesive event when a coordinator’s doing his job,” Kelly added. “If he’s coming in early and scripting everything by himself, leaving everybody else to kind of wonder what’s going on, [you] usually have a group that has good days and bad days.”
LSU doesn’t have a “bad day” on offense. The Tigers roll up 45.3 points per game and never less than 24 points, which happened in an opening loss to Florida State.
“This group is consistent because they all work together, and everybody has a role,” Kelly continued about the offensive staff. “Credit to Mike’s leadership [and] his ability to bring everybody into the process.”
“And then, there’s play-calling. He matches play calls to players. Gets the ball to the playmakers, and that’s what this is about, “Kelly added.
