The legendary No. 7 has been worn by the likes of Patrick Peterson, Tyrann Mathieu, Leonard Fournette and Grant Delpit. Now, the number goes to an offensive lineman, which says a lot about Brian Kelly’s belief in sophomore Will Campbell.
“There’s been great players that have worn No. 7, and I kinda like the significance of the left tackle, cause they are important on every play,” Kelly said. “This is a guy that could probably handle the best pass rushers in the SEC.”

Campbell earned SEC Second-Team and All-Freshman honors from coaches in 2022 and landed on College Football News and Football Writers Association of America’s Freshman All-American teams. The Monroe, La. product had as productive of a freshman campaign as one can have last season, starting in all 13 games, and he only figures to improve with a full offseason as the starter at left tackle.
“I was definitely shocked,” Campbell said of receiving the honor. “We’d never heard of an O-lineman receiving the No. 7 before, but I couldn’t be more grateful for the opportunity. As a kid growing up in Louisiana, Tyrann Mathieu was my favorite player.”
LSU will open its 2023 campaign against Florida State in Orlando on Sunday night.
