Cameron Dicker FG ruled good in controversial call during Chargers-Patriots game
Cameron Dicker has been one of the most consistent kickers in the NFL over the last 2 seasons. The former Texas Longhorn has carved out a nice role for himself as the kicker in Los Angeles.
On Saturday, Dicker and the Chargers are taking on the New England Patriots. At the end of the first half, the Chargers were holding a 17-7 lead over the Patriots. Dicker lined up to try a 38-yard FG, and it looked at first glance like the kick was no good. Even the announcers were unsure until both refs held up the “good” sign.
NFL rules analyst Gene Steratore was brought in to give his opinion on the kick. Steratore mentioned that field goals are not reviewable.
“In the NFL, the entire football must go inside the outside part of the upright,” explained Steratore, per On3. “As you guys can see, even with this angle, it’s very difficult to tell where that football is when it does get right where the upright is.”
Steratore was asked which way he would have gone on the call if it was his decision, but he refused to give a definitive answer.
“Listen, I’ve had a couple of those before I wore the white hat, those are not as easy as people think, that’s a tough call sometimes fellas,” explained the analyst.
Regardless, the points counted and the Chargers entered halftime with a 20-7 lead. With a win, the Chargers will improve to 10-6 on the season and clinch a playoff berth.
