Carson Beck suffered an elbow injury in the first half of the SEC Championship Game against Texas. The injury immediately looked serious, and backup quarterback Gunner Stockton had to finish the game.
On Monday, Georgia announced that Beck tore the ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) in his right elbow and underwent surgery in Los Angeles. A full recovery is expected and the school said that Beck should be able to resume throwing by Spring 2025.
This means the Bulldogs will chase a national championship without their leader. The Bulldogs’ College Football Playoff debut will be on New Year’s Day against Notre Dame in the Sugar Bowl.
Beck’s 2024 season ends with 3,485 passing yards, 28 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions. He also ran for 71 yards and 1 score while leading the Bulldogs to a 10-2 regular season record and a spot in the SEC title game.
Technically, Beck could return to Georgia in 2025 as the QB has 1 season of eligibility remaining. However, Beck is considered to be one of the top QBs in the 2025 NFL Draft alongside Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders, Miami’s Cam Ward, and Alabama’s Jalen Milroe. The injury would no doubt affect his draft stock, though, as it would limit his ability to participate in pre-draft activities. The 2025 NFL Scouting Combine is scheduled to be held in late February in Indianapolis.
Meanwhile, the Bulldogs will get to see if Stockton can be their QB going forward. When Stockton entered the SEC Championship Game, the Bulldogs were in a 6-3 hole. Stockton came in and threw for 71 yards while completing 12 of his 16 passes. The Bulldogs ended up winning 22-19 in overtime, defeating Texas for the second time in 2024 and earning a first-round bye in the process.
