One of the hottest topics of discussion around college football has been College Football Playoff expansion. Will the format ever grow to include more than 4 teams, and if so, when?
For now, things appear to be remaining the same. But there’s been plenty of buzz about the CFP potentially including 8 or 12 teams in the future. That would allow more schools to have an opportunity to try to win the national title at the end of a successful season.
On Thursday, CFP executive director Bill Hancock appeared on “The Paul Finebaum Show” to discuss the topic. And he divulged a potential timeline for when these decisions need to be made.
“We have a contract, this season and 4 more. To expand before that we’d need to make that decision in the next 3-4 months,” Hancock said on the show.
Hancock also shared an analogy for how this process has been moving.
“This is not instant coffee. This is fully-brewed, rich, extravagant coffee,” Hancock added.
So maybe it will take a big longer than some fans were hoping. But it remains a possibility that the CFP will eventually feature a field larger than the 4 teams it currently invites each year.
