Chad Morris discusses how he had to ‘learn on the run’ at Auburn in unusual season

Chad Morris is in his first season as Auburn’s offensive coordinator. But the 2020 season isn’t like any other year.
Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the SEC season didn’t begin until Sept. 26, and teams didn’t play any non-conference games. As soon as they hit the field on game day, they were going up against their SEC rivals in important matchups.
So, Morris and the Tigers had to do things a bit differently leading up to the season.
“You had to kind of learn on the run. You had to evolve and learn who your team is,” Morris said, according to Jordan Hill of the Opelika-Auburn News. “… You can practice all you want, but until you get in a game it really shows then.”
Auburn’s offense may be hitting its stride now. The Tigers scored a season-high 48 points in their win over LSU last Saturday, compiling 506 yards of total offense. It was also a big day for sophomore quarterback Bo Nix, who passed for 300 yards and three touchdowns while also rushing for 81 yards and a score.
This is the first time that Morris has been an offensive coordinator since he held that position at Clemson from 2011-14. He was the head coach at SMU from 2015-17 and then at Arkansas from 2018-19.
After this week’s bye, Auburn’s offense will look to keep it rolling on Nov. 14 when the Tigers travel to Mississippi State for a 4 p.m. ET kickoff on SEC Network.
