Ole Miss lands commitment from Maryland transfer Chance Campbell

Ole Miss just received some much-needed depth on the defensive side of the ball.

Help is on the way for the Rebel defense in the form of linebacker Chance Campbell, formerly of Maryland. The former Terrapin linebacker announced his commitment to the Rebels on Monday.

Campbell is coming off a season in which he recorded 42 tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks in just four games for Maryland’s defense. He was honored as a 2020 Honorable Mention All-Big Ten selection following the season.

For his college career, Campbell has 107 tackles, 10 tackles for loss, 1.5 tackles for loss and an interception. Current Ole Miss co-defensive coordinator D.J. Durkin recruited Campbell to Maryland.

As a Junior (2020): Honorable Mention All-Big Ten … 12th in FBS and 2nd in Big Ten with 11.0 tackles per game … 16th in FBS and 3rd Big Ten with 5.7 solo tackles per game … Second in Big Ten with 1.5 tackles for loss per game … Had at least half a tackle for loss in all four games this season … Started in four of five games, leading team with 43 tackles (22 solo), 5.5 tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks and a fumble recovery or a touchdown … Posted nine tackles (five solo) and a tackle for loss at #12 Indiana (11/28) … Totaled six tackles (two solo), 0.5 sacks and a scoop and score fumble recovery vs. Penn State (11/7), which he took 34 yards to the house to start the third quarter to put Maryland ahead 35-7, the first fumble recovery touchdown by a defensive player since Dexter McDougle at NC State in 2011 … Had most tackles through any two games after first two for Terps since Cole Farrand also had 28 vs. Michigan State (11/15) and Michigan (11/22) in 2014 … Led Terps with 13 tackles (six solo), a career-high 2.5 tackles for loss and one sack vs. Minnesota (10/30) … Had sensational first game of junior season, leading the Terps with a career-best 15 tackles (10 solo) and 1.5 tackles for loss

As a Sophomore (2019): Appeared in 10 games with two starts (Indiana, 10/19; at #17 Minnesota) … Tallied 54 tackles (fifth on the team) with 37 solo stops … Had 4.5 tackles for loss with a forced fumble and interception … Totaled nine tackles at #1 Ohio State (11/9) … Recorded five tackles, including one for loss and a pass breakup at #17 Minnesota (10/26) … Had career day in first career start vs. Indiana (10/19), leading Maryland wih a career-best 10 solo tackles and his first two career pass breakups … Recorded career-high seven tackles (six solo) including a team-best two for loss and recorded first career forced fumble at Purdue (10/12) … Led team with career-best six tackles (five solo) vs. #12 Penn State (9/27) … Tallied first career interception on diving catch at Temple, while tying career-high with four tackles (9/14) … Had three tackles including one for loss vs. Howard (8/31) … named as a 2019-20 Big Ten Distinguished Scholar.

As a Freshman (2018): Appeared in the first 11 games of the season … Tallied 10 tackles (five solo) … Notched two solo tackles at Indiana (11/10) … Posted a career-best four tackles (two solo) vs. Illinois (10/27) … Had first career tackle in season opener with an unassisted tally vs. #23 Texas (9/1).
