Chette Williams, Auburn team chaplain and former player, dies at 61

Chette Williams, Auburn’s longtime team chaplain and former player from 1982-1984, passed away Sunday afternoon after an accident on Lake Martin just west of Auburn. According to reports, Williams, 61, fell into the water around 5:45 p.m. Sunday evening while attempting to exit his pontoon boat. His body was recovered a few hours later, where he was pronounced dead on the scene.
Williams served as Auburn’s team chaplain for the past 26 years, appointed to the position in 1999. He played linebacker for the Tigers, helping the team earn 3 consecutive bowl victories – including the 1984 Sugar Bowl to end the Tigers’ 1983 SEC Championship season.
More importantly, Williams touched many, many lives around Auburn football and the university as a whole. Known as Brother Chette, Williams served as Auburn’s campus director for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. He also published 2 books according to an Auburn press release Monday morning, titled “Hard Fighting Soldier: Finding God in Trials, Tragedies, and Triumphs” and “The Broken Road: Finding God’s Strength and Grace on a Journey of Faith”
Following his career in football, Williams became a licensed minister in 1987, being ordained in 1988. Before becoming Auburn’s team chaplain he spent time in Spartanburg, South Carolina as president of IMPACT Ministries, which ministered for at-risk kids in the upstate South Carolina area.
