Chris Fowler’s contract reportedly comes into focus as free agency nears

Chris Fowler will reportedly enter the final year of his current ESPN contract and he could dive into free agency when the contract comes to an end, according to Front Office Sports.
Fowler’s contract at ESPN is set to expire in 2023. In 2014, he signed a 9-year extension at ESPN and that contract will be coming to an end next year. ESPN will have an important decision to make on Fowler’s future.
He has been a fixture in the network’s college football coverage since 1990. Fowler hosted ESPN’s College GameDay from 1990 to 2014. Before he left his post as College GameDay’s host, Fowler was promoted to the lead play-by-play announcer on ABC’s Saturday Night Football coverage in 2014. Fowler replaced Brent Musburger on ESPN’s premier college football telecast. Rece Davis took over for Fowler on College GameDay in 2015.
In addition to being the lead college football announcer, Fowler has been a play-by-play announcer for ESPN’s tennis coverage. With his versatile skill set, Fowler would be a commodity for any network in free agency.
With networks like Fox, CBS, and NBC expanding their college football coverage, Fowler could be a free agency target for those networks when his ESPN contract is up. Fox Sports pulled away several broadcasters from ESPN like Erin Andrews, Tom Rinaldi, and Jason Benetti in the past. Fowler could be the latest broadcaster that Fox pursues.
It will be interesting to see what Fowler’s future holds after 2023.
