Chris Simms discussed the Philadelphia Eagles’ “tush-push” play that they utilize in short-yardage situations and how to stop it.

Simms’ plan: Attack the quarterback as much as possible.

“If I was a defensive coach, I’d be going, ‘Go headhunting on the quarterback here. Go ahead. Let ’em have it. Dive over. Go crazy. Try to kill the quarterback.’ That’s what I would do,” Simms said.

Simms went on to clarify, saying “I don’t mean ‘kill,’ but just make them pay, make them think twice about doing it.”

The discussed play has grown in popularity in recent years, with the Eagles being attributed with coming up with the main idea. In essence, Jalen Hurts lines up under center in a position where is ready to lunge forward. Two or three players, normally running backs, tight ends, or bigger receivers, line up behind him and push him forward as much as they can to gain 1-2 yards.

College football fans will remember the “Bush Push” as a similar comparison, both of which are plays that were very controversial but well within the rules of the sport.

Simms’ comments received backlash, and Hurts recently said, “There was a guy who wanted me hurt for it too,” in reference to someone else.
