Clark Lea, at the SEC Media Days main podium on Tuesday, had the shortest travel of any coach this week and he welcomed everyone to his hometown. Lea said while there was progress last season, but 5-7 isn’t good enough for Vanderbilt.
“We will never be satisfied with 5-7 … Our goal is post-season play,” Lea said.
Lea spoke about the growth of Vanderbilt, between major facility improvements decades in the making, and a partnership with his boss, Athletics Director Candice Lee, who gave him a chance. He said they’ve formed a great partnership, and she mentored him in their joint goal.
Lea enters his third season at Vanderbilt after the Commodores last season earned their first SEC win since 2019, first Power 5 win since 2018 and first road win since 2018.
Lea continued to refer to his plan of developing players over several years, and recruiting them to the SEC and the program with the highest academic ranking in the SEC as well as the city of Nashville as a selling point.
“We’re playing the long game at Vanderbilt,” he said.
