Coaching carousel dominos: Prime candidate reportedly to receive enhanced contract
As the coaching carousel spins up, it’s commonplace to see coaches leverage rumors or outside interest into pay raises and contract extensions with their home schools. It has reportedly already happened with Michigan State’s Mel Tucker, who might soon be getting a massive extension.
And, according to ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg, expect another Big Ten program to announce something similar.
Included in today's notebook is item on James Franklin, who sources say is set to receive an enhanced contract to remain at #PennState. Board of trustees' compensation subcommittee meets today, so expect some news later. https://t.co/JXtmKYQVj2

James Franklin has been linked to the USC job since it opened early in the season. He’s been mentioned with the LSU job. But Rittenberg writes that he should remain in State College with an extension.
“The idea of a roster redux isn’t overly appealing for Franklin, who turns 50 in February and has an excellent recruiting class coming into Penn State. Despite the Nittany Lions’ 7-4 record, there’s a sense Penn State could break through in 2022 or 2023.”
If Franklin and Tucker are, in fact, off the market, Rittenberg writes that LSU could look to Alabama assistant Bill O’Brien if it can’t woo Jimbo Fisher from Texas A&M—the program’s long-desired target.
