College baseball rankings, May 8: No. 1 changes hands in latest D1Baseball rankings
College baseball has a new national No. 1.
After LSU’s series loss to Auburn over the weekend, the top spot in D1Baseball’s Top 25 changed hands for the first time all season. The Tigers (37-10) had held the No. 1 national ranking since the preseason, but they dropped back-to-back games to Auburn to close out the series — LSU’s first series defeat in conference play so far this season.
LSU dropped down to No. 2 in the latest rankings. The top spot now belongs to Wake Forest.
Arkansas and South Carolina swapped spots in the No. 3 and No. 6 spots in D1Baseball’s rankings. The Razorbacks (36-12) took all 3 games against Mississippi State on the road. The Gamecocks (36-11) were swept by Kentucky in Lexington. The two sides will meet this weekend in Fayetteville, with the first game scheduled for Friday.
Vanderbilt held at No. 5 in the rankings despite dropping 2 of 3 to Alabama over the weekend. The Commodores (34-13) travel to Florida this week for another top-10 matchup in the SEC.
The Gators (37-12) fell from No. 4 to No. 7 in the latest rankings after losing back-to-back games to close out a series against Texas A&M.
Kentucky (33-13) jumped from outside the rankings altogether to No. 17 after taking 3 games off South Carolina. The Wildcats have a mid-week matchup with Tennessee Tech before traveling to Knoxville to face Tennessee.
The Vols (32-16) dropped from No. 18 to No. 23 in the rankings. They’ll host Austin Peay on Tuesday before welcoming Kentucky to town.
