A college football head coach in the Sun Belt has become the second to lose his job after Week 8.
Will Hall, the head coach at Southern Miss, has been fired after a 1-6 start to the 2024 season and a 14-30 overall record. Hall was the head coach of the Golden Eagles since 2021.
“We are grateful to Will and his family for their dedication to Southern Miss over the past four years,” Southern Miss athletic director Jeremy McClain said in a statement. “Will poured his heart and soul into this program and into shaping these young men. Unfortunately, the results on the field didn’t align with our shared goals and expectations.”
Hall, who was the offensive coordinator at Tulane for 2 seasons prior to the Southern Miss job, had significant head coaching success at the Division II level. He went 25-11 in 3 seasons at West Alabama and 31-9 in 3 seasons at West Georgia, leading the Wolves to back-to-back national semifinal appearances in 2014 and 2015.
He then joined the staff at Louisiana, where he served as offensive coordinator for a single season before heading to Memphis as associate head coach and tight ends coach. After 2 seasons as offensive coordinator at Tulane, he was hired as head coach at Southern Miss.
Hall went 3-9 in 2021, but the Golden Eagles improved to 7-6 in 2022 — their first year in the Sun Belt — and won the LendingTree Bowl against Rice. However, they slumped to 3-9 in 2023 and 1-6 through 7 games in 2024.
Earlier on Sunday, Mike Houston was let go by East Carolina in the middle of his 6th season. And Oklahoma reportedly made a change to its staff, relieving offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Seth Litrell of his duties.
