College football player Todric McGee, who was a senior safety at Missouri State, died on Saturday after sustaining a “possible accidental gunshot wound,” according to a report by TMZ Sports.

He was 21 years old.

The Springfield (Mo.) Police Department told TMZ that they got a call regarding a wellness check on Friday morning. McGee was hospitalized after injuries suffered at his residence, according to the Missouri State Athletic Department, and he died from those injuries 1 day later, according to TMZ.

McGee was a safety at Missouri State for the past 4 seasons and was about to play his 5th season with the Bears. He was a standout player at Missouri State, being named to the All-Missouri Valley Conference team in 2023 in addition to several other honors during his years with the program.

Though McGee’s 2024 season was cut short by injuries, he still put up 42 tackles, 5 pass deflections and 1 interception in 5 games.

Missouri State head coach Ryan Beard released an emotional statement on his social media account on behalf of McGee. The headline of the post read: “Rest easy young man.”

Beard asked people to respect the privacy of McGee’s family and of the Missouri State program at this time.
