The College Football Playoff isn’t expanding to eight teams, at least not anytime soon, according to an article from USA Today on Thursday.
“Across college football, in the positions and with the people that matter, in both public comments and in private conversations, there is zero impetus for change,” the article points out.
Those at the top of the college football landscape see no need to change.
“There has been no talk about expansion among our board members; they are pleased with the four-team event,” Bill Hancock, executive director of the Playoff said.
“Right now, it’s not working poorly for us,” Mountain West Commissioner Craig Thompson said. “It’s working well for us.”
Even Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby, whose teams always seem to get left out, said “absolutely not” when asked if anyone was contemplating it.
“Four teams is the right number for the CFP,” Hancock said. “Four doesn’t go too far — it goes just far enough. … Why monkey with a good thing?”
