Temple head football coach Stan Drayton has been fired from the the program, as was formally announced on Sunday, Nov. 17. It came on the heels of the Owls’ 18-15 overtime win against the FAU Owls.

“I would like to extend my appreciation to Coach Drayton for his commitment to Temple University, our student-athletes and the football program over the past three years,” athletic director Arthur Johnson said in a statement. “Under his direction, our student-athletes have excelled in the classroom, been outstanding members of the community and Coach Drayton has represented the University with a tremendous amount of integrity and class. I wish him and his family well in their future endeavors.”

“With the changing landscape of college football and the playoff format, the opportunity for Temple football has never been greater. Our expectation is to compete for American Athletic Conference titles, appear in bowl games consistently, and build a program that our fans, alumni, and students can be proud of in the classroom and on the field. I am confident that our fans will rally around our student-athletes and support them as they always have.”

It may sound surprising that Temple made this decision coming off of a victory, but it should be noted that the team still holds a 3-7 overall record, even with that win added to the right side of the column. It is Drayton’s third consecutive losing season, giving a sense of pessimism for what the future of the Owls long-term could look like under him.

Drayton holds a 9-25 overall record and is 4-18 in American Athletic Conference play.

Prior to joining Temple, Drayton was an assistant coach under Urban Meyer at Florida and Ohio State. He also spent time on Tom Herman’s staff at Texas.
