Colt McCoy’s playing career is over.

The legendary Texas quarterback announced on Monday that he is retiring from the NFL after a pro career that spanned 14 years. McCoy, 37, announced his decision — and spoke about what’s coming next — in this YouTube video:

“One chapter of it is coming to an end,” McCoy said in the video. “The chapter of going out there and playing. I just … my elbow, it doesn’t allow me to do that [anymore]. That’s not an excuse, that’s just how it is. But the love for the game, the passion for it, the enjoyment I find from it … I love football. It’s a beautiful sport. It’s a great game.

“I hate that I can’t play anymore but I’m also grateful for what the good lord allowed me to do and how long I got to play.”

After McCoy’s record-breaking run at Texas, he moved on to the NFL where he had a very successful career in the pros. Mostly serving as a backup, McCoy did start 36 games throughout his career. He had stints with the Cleveland Browns, San Francisco 49ers, New York Giants, Arizona Cardinals and Washington. McCoy played in parts of 12 seasons and last appeared in a game in 2022.

As for McCoy’s next chapter, he’s set to join NBC Sports as an analyst for its Big Ten coverage. NBC announced that he’ll be in the booth alongside play-by-play man Paul Burmeister to make his broadcast debut during Colorado-Nebraska in Week 2.

“College Football has always held a special place in my heart. With the expansion of the Big Ten and new era of College Football, it is the perfect time to join NBC Sports,” McCoy said in a press release. “I can’t wait to share in the passion, excitement, and competitive spirit every week!”
