Controversial Orlando Sentinel writer suspends himself over Florida-Kentucky pick

Florida had beaten Kentucky 29-straight times heading into last weekend’s contest. Literally, Ronald Reagan was the President when the Wildcats last upended the Gators.

Kentucky is still…Kentucky when it comes to football. It lost its season-opening game to Southern Miss at home, and hasn’t (at this point) gotten over the proverbial hump in order to become a bowl team.

With everything pointing towards another Florida victory, Orlando Sentinel writer Mike Bianchi picked Kentucky to upset the Gators by five points.

Well…Florida ended up winning the game by a score of 45-7. Ashamed and dismayed by his pick, Bianchi decided to impose a week-long suspension in terms of predicting college football games:

“I’m going to penalize myself for the inane prediction that Kentucky would upset UF. When college athletes do something stupid, I often write they should be suspended for a week so they can sit on the bench and think about what they have done.I don’t want to be a hypocrite, and this is why I’m self-imposing a one-week suspension on picking football games. This is going to be tough because I’ve been making weekly pigskin predictions for 25 years. In short, I have become a football-picking junkie.”

Kudos to Bianchi for approaching this instance with humor and self-deprecation.
