Former Alabama DB/PR Cyrus Jones has made a strong first impression in the NFL.

A second-round pick by the New England Patriots, Jones has been getting plenty of work this offseason.

NESN reports that Jones was solid both defensively and on special teams during the Patriots’ recent minicamp:

Jones looked comfortable at both cornerback and as a punt returner during his first NFL minicamp. He intercepted Garoppolo during a 2-on-2 drill Thursday. He has a shot to replace Julian Edelman and Danny Amendola as the team’s primary punt returner in 2016 and could take over the slot cornerback role. The second-round pick could make an immediate impact for the Patriots.

If Jones continues to impress as a punt returner, it’s reasonable to think he could be the Patriots’ top option. Amendola is injury-prone and Edelman is too valuable offensively to risk injury on special teams, so Jones shouldn’t have a difficult time earning the starting job.

If he can continue to contribute defensively, the Patriots will have an even better chance of making it back to the AFC Championship game this season.
