Without their former All-SEC quarterback Dak Prescott, Dan Mullen and Mississippi State lost in a 21-20 shocker to South Alabama in Week 1. While the Bulldogs could have used Prescott’s services, he is ready to start for the Dallas Cowboys in his rookie season.
“I’m really excited for him for that opportunity, and I know he’s going to do everything he can to be prepared,” Mullen said of Prescott on Wednesday’s SEC coaches teleconference.
Prescott was a rare breed for Mississippi State, spending five years with the program and collecting numerous school and SEC records along the way. Mullen believes Prescott’s time with the Bulldogs will help him tremendously at the next level.
“He’s a guy who went five years through college,” Mullen said. “He was able to grow and mature. And I think one of the things that he got to learn here at Mississippi State through the good and the bad is that you’re only as good as your last play.”
One of the qualities that set Prescott apart from some of the other top players in the conference was his natural leadership ability.
“One of the things that he brought was such great leadership to the team,” Mullen said. “When you have a guy who’s such an alpha dog and such a strong leader, guys look for that leadership.”
Prescott will make his NFL regular season debut on Sunday, Sept. 11 when the Cowboys host the New York Giants at 4:25 p.m. ET.
Mississippi State will look to rebound from its troubling loss in a home contest against South Carolina on Saturday at 7 p.m. ET.
