When Spencer Rattler elected to leave Oklahoma for South Carolina, Gamecock nation expected a baller under center to elevate their passing game. But while Rattler’s overall play has been mundane at best, he’ll be remembered for his heroics in the national spotlight following Saturday’s outing.

ESPN’s Dan Mullen listed Rattler as one of his top quarterbacks following Week 12. Rattler was the only passer listed from the SEC following his role in South Carolina’s 63-38 win over No. 5 Tennessee.

Rattler was the driving force in Saturday’s upset. Completing 81.1% of his throws, the former Sooner sensation torched the Vols’ defense with 438 yards and 6 touchdowns. He also led 9 total scoring drives and averaged a season-high 11.9 yards per throw.

The Gamecocks out-gained Tennessee 606-507. Behind Rattler’s arm, South Carolina went 8-of-11 on 3rd down-conversions and won the time of possession battle (39:21), thus forcing the Vols’ already up-tempo offense to kick into high gear late in the 2nd half.

Rattler, who could return to Columbia for another 2 seasons due to the COVID-19 eligibility waiver, was named Maxwell Player of the Week for his efforts, as well as SEC Offensive Player of the Week. The Gamecocks will have a chance to finish with 8 regular season wins for the 1st time since 2017 this Saturday against No. 7 Clemson.
