Deion Sanders has issued a comment on his conversation with Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones regarding the franchise’s head coaching vacancy.
Sanders was initially linked to the Cowboys on Monday evening after they officially parted ways with head coach Mike McCarthy. A few hours later, Sanders confirmed that he had spoken to Jones about the job. He called the job “intriguing” but also spoke about his appreciation for Boulder and everyone in his Colorado program.
“To hear from Jerry Jones is truly delightful, and it’s intriguing,” Deion Sanders told ESPN’s Adam Schefter. “I love Jerry and believe in Jerry. After you hang up, and process it, and think about it, it’s intriguing. But I love Boulder and everything there is about our team, the coaches, our student body and the community.”
While Sanders’s statement is vague, it seems as though he’s reluctant to leave Colorado. He’s previously said he wouldn’t be interested in coaching at the NFL level, but perhaps the Cowboys job could be different for Sanders. He starred for the Cowboys from 1995-99.
Sanders has not yet agreed to a contract extension with Colorado. He’s been Colorado’s coach for 2 seasons, which means he has 3 years remaining on the initial 5-year, $29.5 million deal he signed ahead of the 2023 campaign.
Colorado won 9 games in 2024 for the first time since 2016.
