Deion Sanders shocked the college football world earlier this month when Jackson State signed Travis Hunter, the No. 1 recruit in the class of 2022. Hunter was a long-time verbal commitment to Florida State, Sanders’ alma mater, before flipping his commitment to JSU in one of the biggest signing day surprises of all time.
Some FSU fans did not take the news well that Sanders had flipped the Seminoles’ top recruit. One fan went viral on Twitter for burning his framed Sanders FSU jersey. Sanders recently appeared on “The Rich Eisen Show” and was asked about FSU fans’ reaction to Hunter flipping his commitment.
“He never belonged to them, I don’t think I ‘took’ him,” Sanders said, per 247Sports. “I saw the burning of the jerseys. I saw all that foolishness. I laughed my butt off, first of all.”
Sanders moved on to the point that Florida State has been using his Seminole legacy in recruiting players to FSU.
“I think it was either the year before or the year before that, your head coach — who I’m very fond of and I think is a great coach and who I think will do tremendous feats for my alma-mater — called me to help him recruit a kid out of Louisiana,” Sanders recalled.
“I FaceTimed the kid, I FaceTimed the mother and I did my thing. Florida State has been using me for years to do what I do, help influence kids to come to my wonderful alma-mater. No problem. I did it. I believe the kid signed. So what’s the difference in me doing that and doing it for myself? It was good enough for you, but it’s not good enough for me? That’s what I have a problem with. So you’re saying now, I’m good enough to get you players, but I’m not good enough to get me players?”
Hunter, a two-way talent, was expected to play defensive back in college and was graded as a 5-star DB.
