Derek Mason staying in the conference? Former Vandy coach reportedly in contact with SEC program

Just weeks after getting fired by Vanderbilt, Derek Mason may be back in the SEC sooner rather than later.
SEC football reporter Matt Zenitz of AL.com tweeted on Wednesday that Mason is “expected to be a hot commodity for defensive coordinator jobs and has already been contacted about multiple Power Five defensive coordinator openings.”
Zenitz added that this “includes some preliminary contact with LSU about its DC opening.”
Mason had a successful run as the defensive coordinator at Stanford under David Shaw from 2011-2013, and was named a finalist for the Broyles Award – given to the nation’s top assistant coach. In his seven-year run at Vanderbilt, Mason was 27-55.
LSU fired Bo Pelini after one disastrous season in charge of the Tigers’ defense and is looking to rebound with a home run hire. Mason is an accomplished Power Five defensive coordinator with SEC experience and could be the right fit for Ed Orgeron if that is the direction they decide to go.
