Dont’a Hightower not focusing on next NFL contract

Former Alabama LB Dont’a Hightower has already had a football career most players could only dream of.

A two-time BCS national champion (2009 and 2011) with the Crimson Tide, Hightower was a first-round pick of the New England Patriots in 2012. With the Pats, Hightower was a part of the 2014 squad that won Super Bowl XLIX in dramatic fashion against the Seattle Seahawks.

Now, the 26-year-old All-Pro is entering the final year of his first NFL contract. But, with free agency looming, al.com reports that Hightower isn’t stressing about his future:

“I ain’t got nothing to do with none of that,”Hightower said. “I’m just out here trying to get better with my teammates.”

When a reporter reminded Hightower that he did have something to do with it – through his performance and the choice that free agency offered him – he replied: “That might be. There is a time and place for everything, and right now, I’m just out here trying to get better.”

It remains to be seen if Hightower will remain in New England beyond this season. The Patriots are notoriously ruthless when it comes to free agency and Hightower will almost certainly be courted by a number of other teams with more money to offer.

But it seems Hightower is focusing on having a strong 2016 season. If he can stay healthy and the Patriots get better play along the offensive line, there’s a chance Hightower could add another Super Bowl ring to his collection.
