Dowell Loggains addresses move from NFL to college, the appeal at South Carolina

New South Carolina offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains met with the media Wednesday.
The 42-year-old was hired by Shane Beamer earlier this week to replace Marcus Satterfield and will bring significant NFL experience to Columbia.
Among Loggain’s stops in the NFL were Tennessee, Chicago, Cleveland, Miami, and the New York Jets, where he served in offensive roles ranging from quarterbacks coach to offensive coordinator.
He left in the professional game after the 2020 season, however, and coached tight ends the last 2 years at his alma mater, Arkansas.
Following his stint with the Jets, Loggains decided to move to college football after spending about 3 months with Penn State coach James Franklin.
The two coaches had developed a relationship in Nashville when Loggains was with the Titans and Franklin was at Vanderbilt.
Loggains said Wednesday that the 2 years he spent with the Razorbacks will help him immensely in his new role.
“Going to Arkansas for those 2 years, it will be such a benefit to me,” he said.
Loggains was also asked Wednesday about why the position at South Carolina was appealing to him. He said that what Beamer was building with the Gamecocks was the primary appeal.
“I’ve gotten to the point in my career, where I can be picky with jobs, and I start picking people,” Loggains said. “… Something’s special going on there, I want to be a part of it.”
Additionally, Loggains was asked about the differences in the college and professional games. He said that the Xs and Os aren’t very different but that in college you have control over your personnel.
“I don’t think the play-calling process is any different in college than it is the NFL. What is different is the field dimensions,” said Loggains before adding, “In college football you’re accountable for your roster. If you don’t have a good enough roster, that’s your fault.”
Finally, Loggains was asked how he’ll define success in his role, to which he replied, “”Did you max out everyone to the best of their ability?”
