One of the first orders of business for new South Carolina offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains will be to convince Spencer Rattler to return to the Gamecocks next season.

The 22-year-old Rattler transferred to South Carolina after 3 seasons at Oklahoma and could opt to pursue a professional career after a Gator Bowl matchup with Notre Dame.

Rattler passed for 2,780 yards, 16 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions this season, but he was at his best late in the year in upset wins over Tennessee and Clemson.

In those 2 games alone, the 6-1, 215-pounder completed 55-of-76 passes for 798 yards, 8 touchdowns, and 2 interceptions.

“Those last 2 games, he felt like it was the best version of him,” Loggains said Wednesday during his introductory press conference. “He was playing free.”

He added that by the end of the season Rattler was a much different player than the one he saw In September as part of Arkansas’ coaching staff.

“I think those last 2 games, and I hadn’t had a chance to really dive in and talk to Spencer about his, but he played free,” Loggains said. “And for whatever reason, he got to the point where he looked very confident. And it didn’t feel that way all year. It’s hard for me to sit up here and judge that, but that would be my observation, which could be wrong.

“You have to get that way where, that’s part of the culture as well, where you create and we want to create as well offensively, you get to the point where you’re confident. And knowledge builds confidence and confidence allows you to play fast. At that point, those last 2 games, that’s what it felt like. I was extremely impressed with him.”

Loggains added that he’ll be working hard to forge a relationship with Rattler to get him back and that if successful Rattler would be “the biggest recruit since my wife.”
