Missouri head coach Eli Drinkwitz revealed on Tuesday that starting wide receiver Chance Luper had returned home from the hospital but was still recovering from the undisclosed illness that will reportedly sideline him for 6 to 8 weeks.

Drinkwitz said Tuesday he’s now uncertain how long the star sophomore will be out.

Very thankful he was diagnosed before he played,” said Drinkwitz, referring to Luper developing the illness on Thursday morning, just hours before he could’ve played in that night’s season-opening victory over Louisiana Tech.

The 6-2 receiver from Dallas caught 21 passes for 203 yards and a touchdown last season, when he started 4 games.

He is the son of Missouri running backs coach Curtis Luper.

“To have your son in the hospital and still show up and coach says a lot about him as a person, how much he cares about our team and character of him,” Drinkwitz said after Thursday night’s opener. “I know Chance was really disappointed. He had such a beautiful fall camp and had earned the right to start (Thursday night).”
