Even now that the BCS’ rating system is out of the world of college football, the way in which teams defeat their opponents will always be closely monitored. Of course, a 48-point win should mean more than a two-point nail-biter.
ESPN.com listed 10 teams should commonly blow out their opponents this upcoming season. In regard to the Southeastern Conference, four teams made the list.
No. 4 Tennessee
Predicted point differential: 18.3
According to the article, the Volunteers are projected to win by an average of 21 points in five games this season – the most in FBS. Those five opponents are Tennessee Tech, Ohio, Appalachian State, Kentucky and Missouri. Probably not huge resume-builders, but, a blowout is a blowout.
No. 5 LSU
Predicted point differential: 18.0
Just behind the Volunteers are the Tigers of LSU. LSU is an FPI favorite in every game this season according to the article, but obviously being in the SEC West won’t present a ton of easy challenges. In its non-conference schedule, however, the Tigers are expected to win by an average of 33 points – and even 14 over its season-opener, Wisconsin.
No. 9 Georgia
Predicted point differential: 13.7
Further down the list are the Georgia Bulldogs. Being on this list in the first place is great, but beefing up its average scoring margin will be even better on Sept. 10 when the team faces Nicholls State.
In the article, it says, “The Bulldogs are expected to win that game by an average of 59 points, so it is expected to be one of the most lopsided games of the season.”
Even without that contest and others against FCS competition, though, Georgia is still an FPI double-digit favorite in seven of its games.
No. 10 Alabama
Predicted point differential: 13.3
Last on the ESPN’s list are the defending national champions. The Crimson Tide, like LSU, live life in the SEC West, but will be heavy favorites against Chattanooga, Kent State, Western Kentucky and Kentucky.
Regarding Alabama in the article, it says, “Alabama should again have a dominant defense, but after losing its starting quarterback and two leading rushers, the Crimson Tide may not have the offense to rack up as many blowouts.”
Next five: Washington, Western Kentucky, Baylor, Louisville, Florida
