ESPN FPI Rankings after Week 8: There’s a new No. 1, but it isn’t Georgia or Oregon

ESPN FPI rankings are updated every week during the college football season, and the post-Week 8 update is sure to leave fans across the country with raised eyebrows.
Texas was the No. 1 team before losing to Georgia on Saturday night in an incredible game in Austin. So the Longhorns fell to No. 2 this week.
Surely that means either Georgia, who took down Texas, or Oregon, who is unbeaten and has a win over Ohio State, is the new top dog, right?
Wrong.
Ohio State moved up to No. 1 in this week’s ESPN Football Power Index (FPI) top 25. Here’s a look at the full top 25 rankings as they stand post-Week 8:
- Ohio State
- Texas
- Alabama
- Georgia
- Ole Miss
- Tennessee
- Notre Dame
- Oregon
- Penn State
- Miami
- Indiana
- LSU
- Clemson
- Texas A&M
- USC
- SMU
- Louisville
- Kansas State
- Iowa State
- Mizzou
- Boise State
- Florida
- South Carolina
- Colorado
- Wisconsin
That’s 10 SEC teams in the top 25. The SEC squads that didn’t make the cut were Oklahoma (29), Arkansas (31), Auburn (32), Kentucky (41), Vanderbilt (42) and Mississippi State (60).
Can Texas, Alabama or Georgia climb into the No. 1 spot in the coming weeks? We’ll see if anyone can dethrone the Buckeyes as the season continues. Tune in next week to see how the FPI changes after Week 9.
