ESPN revealed Tuesday that the 2021 Music City Bowl matchup between Tennessee and Purdue was the most-watched bowl game outside of the New Year’s Six:
The TransPerfect Music City Bowl recorded 5.6 million viewers, the most-viewed non-New Year’s Six bowl this season and the third-most-viewed non-New Year’s Six bowl game in the past six seasons. The matchup between Tennessee and Purdue was the most-watched Music City Bowl since 2010, and the audience peaked with 8.9 million viewers the final 15 minutes.
Purdue won the game 48-45 in overtime. The back-and-forth, high-scoring battle had a controversial finish. In overtime of the Music City Bowl, Josh Heupel elected to go for the touchdown on fourth-and-goal from the 1-yard line instead of attempting a field goal. Tennessee ball-carrier Jaylen Wright was called down by forward progress before he extended the ball over the plane of the goal line. Many media members and Tennessee fans felt Wright did not have his progress stopped and had scored a touchdown.
