Was it a backwards pass? Should it have been a fumble?

Those are the questions Arkansas fans are going to be asking for a long time after Saturday’s narrow loss at Auburn, as a late spike attempt by Auburn QB Bo Nix appeared to be a fumble instead.

On SportsCenter on Sunday morning, ESPN rules analyst Bill Lemonnier looked at the play and said it should have been Arkansas’s ball (via WholeHogSports.com):

“To me this is a clear backward pass,” Lemonnier said. “Replay should have reversed this and given Arkansas the ball.”

The ball was not awarded to Arkansas, obviously, and Auburn kicked the game-winning field goal. Now the Razorbacks find themselves at 1-2 instead of potentially 2-1.

That’s a play that will add some serious fuel to the Arkansas-Auburn game moving forward.
