The Florida Gators entered Saturday’s season opener at home as slight underdogs against their in-state rival from the ACC, the Miami Hurricanes.

Billy Napier entered the 2024 season with one of the hottest seats in the country. With an absolutely brutal schedule to close out the season that includes games against No. 20 Texas A&M and No. 15 Tennessee before Halloween before nothing short of a gauntlet to close out the year, the Gators needed to look like they could compete with top talent on Saturday.

Starting on Nov. 2, Florida closes out this year’s schedule at No. 1 Georgia, then a road trip to No. 4 Texas, before hosting No. 13 LSU and No. 6 Ole Miss with the final game of the season coming on the road against No. 10 Florida State.

The Gators were dominated on both sides of the ball by the start of the fourth quarter. Miami put up 446 yards of total offense in the first three quarters, with a balanced attack of passing (321 yards) and rushing (125 yards). Offensively, even with second-year former Wisconsin transfer QB Graham Mertz, the Gators’ offense was stagnant from the initial whistle, posting 190 total yards at the start of the fourth quarter including just 90 yards passing. They were 0-of-8 on third down with 11:54 remaining in the game.

It’s no surprise Florida fans took to social media as they watched the Gators get pummeled by the Hurricanes and they aren’t wasting any time calling for Napier’s job.

It would be shocking for the Florida brass to make a drastic move at head coach after one game into the new season, but if Napier can’t turn this program around quickly — facing one of the hardest schedules in college football — then his fate could come sooner rather than later.
