There’s a situation in Gainesville.
On the heels of a 23-point loss to South Carolina and the firing of a pair of assistant coaches, a home game against FCS Samford was supposed to help calm the waters at Florida. Coach Dan Mullen is firmly on the hot seat and the Gators have looked more and more unsightly as the year has progressed.
Samford has other ideas.
The road Bulldogs have a 21-14 lead after the first quarter thanks in part to an offensive show in the opening frame. Samford put up 209 yards of total offense.
Quarterback Liam Welch went 11-for-18 for 177 yards and 2 touchdowns in the first 15 minutes alone. The Bulldogs have scoring plays of 58 and 40 yards, two more explosive plays, and are 6-for-7 on 3rd down. On the second scoring drive of the day for Samford, they converted a 4th-and-1 on the ground and then scored on a 3rd-and-5.
Florida averaged 2.3 yards per run in the first quarter.
