Florida QB coach Brian Johnson wants starter to set the program standard

The quarterback battle in Gainesville is still Florida’s most interesting unanswered question, and we aren’t any closer to answering it as we were three months ago.

Feleipe Franks, Kyle Trask and Emory Jones are all fighting for the spot under center, and Mullen has still yet to name a favorite.

Franks started eight games last year as a redshirt freshman, while Trask and Jones still have not taken a snap in college.

Florida QB coach Brian Johnson’s goal in camp has been to throw as much adversity at the young quarterbacks as possible to see what they are made of. He wants his quarterback to be held to the highest standard.

“Our expectations of that room are extremely, extremely high,” said Johnson. “First and foremost, you have to understand that playing that position, you are held to a higher standard than everybody. Everyone is going to look to you and you’re gonna set the standard for what is acceptable in the program. Our guys have to do a great job of continuing to develop. It takes time, but they’ve got to continually take steps in the right direction.”

Florida’s coaching staff continues to take this situation very seriously, but there only remains a few more weeks before they have to make a decision. The Gators open up the season against Charleston Southern on Sept. 1.
