Following an overall strong spring performance, Florida head coach Jim McElwain has indicted the Gators’ frontrunner to start under center would be redshirt sophomore Luke Del Rio. Not only is Del Rio poised to open the season as a starter, he appears to now be a full-fledged scholarship player with the team.
Del Rio had this Twitter exchange Wednesday, which suggests the former walk-on has earned himself a scholarship at Florida:
actually I'm technically not anymore so……
— Luke Del Rio (@LDelRio12) July 6, 2016
After joining the Gators as a walk-on last season, Del Rio was forced to sit out the 2015 campaign after transferring from Oregon State. Before playing in the Pac-12, Del Rio was a walk-on at Alabama in 2013. Despite not getting an initial scholarship from Alabama or Florida, Del Rio was a touted high school prospect and competed in the prestigious Elite 11 Finals as a high school senior. Del Rio is also the son of current Oakland Raiders head coach Jack Del Rio.
During Florida’s latest Orange and Blue spring game, Del Rio threw for 176 yards and two touchdowns on 10 of 11 throws.
